Bridgette A. Wimberly Memorial Writers Fund
Welcome to the Bridgette A. Wimberly Memorial Writers Fund. The purpose of the fund is to assist aspiring writers writing about lived experiences explored through poetry, plays, and operatic libretto investigating the struggles and triumphs of those who have experienced and understand marginalization. Writers will be selected from proposal submissions that speak to need, ambitions, and ideas on giving back to a community. This BAW Writers Fund is currently based in New York City with aims to broaden its reach throughout America.
Inspired by Ms. Wimberly's achievements, friends and family have created the Bridgette A. Wimberly Memorial Writers Fund. We invite you to join us by making a donation which will provide financial support with mentorship opportunities for writers, poets and librettists of color, especially in underserved communities.
Her playwriting career was jump started when Ms. Wimberly was selected by the Cherry Lane Mentor Project as a part of its first group of playwrights. Mentored by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award recipient Wendy Wasserstein, Ms. Wimberly's play, St. Lucy's Eyes, went on to a full production at the Women's Project in New York City and a critically acclaimed run, starring Ruby Dee, at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia receiving 3 Audelco Awards. She was also a devoted advocate for breast cancer awareness and survivorship through her writing program, From Breast Cancer to Broadway. Launched in 2009, she taught breast cancer survivors how to write plays about their cancer journeys and commissioned local actors and directors to perform their works on stage. Bridgette served on the Cherry Lane Board of Directors for over 10 years, Dramatist Guild Member for 21 years, and a Lifetime Ensemble Studio Theatre Member.
We hope you will consider helping us offer a platform to encourage and enhance writers to further their professional and educational training and supplement financial burdens. Your tax-deductible contributions can change an aspiring scholars’ path to success. Donations of any size are greatly appreciated.
