CONTINUUM at DOCUMENTA
In July, 2022 Continuum partnered with the German organization Sonic Exchange to present a sound installation and a series of performances and interviews at Documenta, one of the world’s largest art festivals, taking place every five years in the city of Kassel, in Germany.
In the spring/summer of 2020, while much of the world was in lockdown, pianist Ursel Schlicht recorded a 46 minute solo piano improvisation in her studio in Kassel, Germany. She did this shortly after participating in mass demonstrations in Berlin following the murder of George Floyd, and during the first wave of the covid-19 pandemic. It was her personal response and attempt to process these major world events.
She then sent the audio to saxophonist Catherine Sikora-Mingus (then living in Cork, Ireland) and percussionist Andrew Drury (in Brooklyn, USA) and they each recorded additional audio to accompany Schlicht’s piano track. The work was then presented both as an audio sound installation (which is also available for download on bandcamp), and as a live improvisation as part of the Documenta festival.
